Reasons Why Men Should Wear A Sports Jacket

The classic men's jacket is a classic wardrobe piece for a reason. It makes any man look respectable. Think about it. Pair a well-tailored jacket with classic shoes and sharp trousers, you've given 90% of your body a time-tested, solid presentation. All you have to do is brush your hair and smile!

The single men's jacket, buttoned near the waist and ending at the bottom of the buttocks has endured for a century because it builds out the shoulders, exaggerates the trimness of the waist, and it's solid lines allow the eyes to move up and down the body without being jarred to the right or left.There are specific proportions the human eye finds pleasing. The “golden ratio” and similar mathematical cousins crop up in art across all cultural lines, demonstrating our inherited preference for certain shapes and balances. Unfortunately, most men's bodies aren't built along any kind of ideal ratio, which is why none of us look like Greek sculptures (the ancient Greeks loved them some math). Our waists tend to be right around the midpoint of our height or just slightly above it, which is great for balancing and running away from saber-toothed tigers and other evolutionary needs but not as aesthetically pleasing as something more in the neighborhood of a 1:2 ratio. A suitcoat raises our perceived waistline, dividing our body into a top third and a bottom two-thirds rather than cleanly in half.

Black is by far one of the most popular colors when it comes to fashion, and it’s easy to see why. The color black in fashion has traditionally been associated with class, sophistication and even mystery, which makes it amazing for smart style and formal wear. Be careful when buying your black clothing though, it’s easy to see when a piece of black clothing is low quality because after a few washes it fades to an icky grey color. When it comes to black, quality is very important.If you live in a warmer climate, I’d steer away from wearing too much black in your outfit, as it can look awkward and feel awkward. Sunny climates are meant for color! While there is nothing wrong with wearing an all black outfit, make sure black doesn’t take over your entire wardrobe like it has a tendency to. Wearing black all day every day can and will get boring. Layering your black outfits with things such as hoodies and black leather jackets makes for a great look. Sometimes when the outfit calls for it, throwing some vibrant or earth tone colors can make an all black outfit look even better.

Milan Fashion Week - Etro Presentation

With models lounging on giant cushions, perched on vintage trunks or reclining on kitsch patterned sofas, their decorative outfits blending with the furniture, all that was missing was a psychedelic soundtrack. Etro for the presentation of its 50th anniversary men’s collection — presented at the cavernous Palazzo del Ghiaccio, the ice-skating rink in Milan — recruited the help of local auction houses to re-create the home of a dandy without the walls, with all of the items up for sale. The message? “The way you live is the way you dress, and I’ve always been known as an interior decorator of men’s,” quipped Kean Etro, seated in a vintage orange chair, dressed in a check suit and shirt accessorized with a beaded headband. “The design started from here,” he added, pointing down to a Persian carpet, symbolizing the origins of the house’s paisley symbol, as models sauntered by in long, lean, graphic carpet coats and droopy sweaters with bands of carpet embroidery. One gleaming all-embroidered tuxedo jacket was a work of art. Tailoring ranged from fitted suits in jewel tones to classic suiting in stuffy plaids but updated with bold colorways, such as orange accents in the overcheck. Even the subtler stuff, like a camel coat, sported a stitchwork outline of a horse at the back.

Have you always thought velvet is too glitzy for you? Too Liberace-esque and so best left in the closet? Think again because this suave and swanky fabric is too good to keep under lock and key. But to look good in velvet means wearing it right. Here’s how to look super sharp in this most luxurious of fabrics.

Velvet only looks classy if it’s good quality. Avoid velvet made from synthetic fabrics, such as those produced in polyester and nylon. Products like these look cheap and nasty and don’t wear well either. Real velvet, woven from silk or cotton, is the only choice for gents with style. It oozes quality and authenticity and as long as you look after it, will keep you looking great for years. Velvet has that smoking jacket feel and a lot of people like it because it has a bit of a vintage look. Velvet looks best when you choose one smart, tailored piece worn with contrasting fabrics. Velvet materials are very seductive, so wear it with macho attitude.

Velvet blazers play a melodic rock ballad without all that metal and unnecessary zip detail. For a dressed down look, pair your jacket with a plain t-shirt, simple silk scarf, dark trousers and a pair of Chelsea boots. I suggest you wear your velvet jacket with a denim shirt for a shabby chic outfit that still oozes style. For more formal wear, I suggest you to team velvet with a roll neck sweater for a jazzy, shirtless look.

The Art Of Menswear Making By Caruso

Caruso is an Italian menswear manufacturer which emblematises the traditions and principles of quality, handmade tailoring. Originally established by Raffaele Caruso, upon his move from Naples to Soragna in 1958, the small, family run tailoring shop came to exist in several different incarnations across the decades, eventually growing to become one of Europe’s biggest and most advanced menswear producers by the early 2000s.

Having come under the guidance of fashion world entrepreneur Umberto Angeloni, Caruso took the form it takes today, and has continued to go from strength to strength. It achieves this because of its unwavering commitment to fabrics and construction methods of the highest calibre: the principles which have garnered Caruso its fine reputation since the beginning.

Crucially, Caruso takes the utmost pride in the fact that all of its garments are handmade in Italy, a narrative which they claim is one part romantic, one part technical. The idea that a piece is made in Italy undoubtedly conjures evocative imagery, and perhaps even makes something all the more covetable. But the technical part of the narrative ensures that this extra desirability is not for any shallow reasons, but rather because Caruso always produces superior garments.

GDM team had the opportunity to visit Caruso headquarters in Soragna Italy and to see up-close the journey of making menswear for real gentlemen.
